What Does Homeostasis Really Mean?
Homeostasis is your body's ability to maintain a stable, healthy internal environment even when conditions around you—or inside you—are constantly changing.
Your body continuously monitors and adjusts thousands of processes, including blood sugar, body temperature, blood pressure, fluid and electrolyte balance, hormones, oxygen levels, acid-base balance, and energy production.
Homeostasis does not mean everything remains at one fixed level. Healthy regulation means your body can sense change, respond appropriately, and return toward a healthy range.

What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is your body's ability to maintain a stable, healthy internal environment even when conditions around you—or inside you—are constantly changing.
Your body is continuously monitoring and adjusting thousands of processes. It regulates your blood sugar, body temperature, blood pressure, fluid and electrolyte balance, hormones, oxygen levels, acid-base balance, energy production, and many other functions.
Homeostasis does not mean that everything in your body stays at one fixed level. It means that your body can sense change, respond appropriately, and return toward a healthy range.
Think of homeostasis as your body's internal control system. When that control system is working well, your different organs and metabolic systems communicate and adjust to help keep you functioning properly.
Why is homeostasis important to your health?
Nearly every system in your body depends on homeostatic regulation.
When you eat a meal, your body has to regulate blood glucose. When you become dehydrated, your body has to conserve water and adjust electrolytes. When temperature changes, your body has to regulate its internal temperature.
When you encounter an infection, injury, emotional stress, or another challenge, multiple systems have to coordinate an appropriate response.
Your nervous system, endocrine system, immune system, cardiovascular system, kidneys, liver, digestive system, and metabolism all participate in maintaining this internal balance.
Good health therefore depends not only on individual organs working properly, but also on your body's ability to coordinate those systems and adapt to change.
What happens when homeostasis becomes dysfunctional?
When your homeostatic mechanisms are not functioning properly, your body may have increasing difficulty adapting to physical, metabolic, environmental, or psychological stress.
Initially, your body may compensate. You may have symptoms even though conventional testing remains within a laboratory reference range.
As the underlying stress continues, those compensatory mechanisms may become less effective and measurable abnormalities or disease may eventually appear.
The effects depend on which regulatory systems are being disrupted. Problems may involve blood sugar regulation, hormones, blood pressure, body temperature, sleep, energy metabolism, fluid balance, immune responses, or other physiological processes.
A symptom may be the visible result of a much larger problem involving your body's ability to regulate itself.
Why would my homeostasis become dysfunctional?
There is rarely one universal cause.
Your homeostatic systems are constantly responding to stressors. These stressors can come from many different sources, including:
- Illness or injury
- Inadequate sleep
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Metabolic abnormalities
- Hormonal problems
- Infections
- Chronic inflammation
- Medications
- Environmental exposures
- Psychological stress
- Other physiological challenges
The important question is therefore not simply:
“What disease do I have?” It is also: “What is interfering with my body's ability to regulate itself appropriately?”
At Michael Rothman MD, this is one of the central questions we investigate.
How can I improve dysfunctional homeostasis?
There is no single medication, supplement, diet, or treatment that simply “fixes homeostasis.”
The first step is to determine which regulatory systems are struggling and what is placing stress on those systems.
That may require looking beyond an isolated symptom or abnormal laboratory result and evaluating how your metabolism, hormones, nervous system, immune system, nutrition, sleep, environment, medications, medical conditions, and other factors interact.
Treatment should then be individualized to address the specific problems identified.
Depending on your situation, this might include correcting nutritional or metabolic abnormalities, treating underlying medical conditions, improving sleep and circadian patterns, changing nutrition, addressing hormonal dysfunction when appropriate, modifying medications, reducing identifiable physiological stressors, or making other targeted interventions.
The goal is not simply to suppress your symptoms. The goal is to understand why your body is having difficulty maintaining healthy regulation and address the factors contributing to that dysfunction.
This is the basis of the Rothman Method™: identifying the foundational stressors and metabolic imbalances that may be interfering with your body's homeostatic control and developing an individualized strategy to address them.
What kind of doctor treats homeostatic dysfunction?
There is currently no medical specialty called “Homeostatic Medicine” and no board certification for physicians who specialize specifically in homeostatic dysfunction.
Instead, conventional medicine generally divides disturbances of homeostasis among different specialties.
An endocrinologist may treat problems involving blood sugar or hormones. A nephrologist may treat fluid and electrolyte regulation. A cardiologist may treat blood-pressure or cardiovascular abnormalities. A neurologist may treat certain nervous-system disorders. An internist or family physician may coordinate several of these problems.
The challenge arises when multiple systems are involved simultaneously and no single abnormality fully explains why you do not feel well.
Some physicians practicing internal medicine, preventive medicine, integrative medicine, metabolic medicine, or functional medicine may take a broader systems-oriented approach. However, the training, philosophy, diagnostic approach, and treatment methods can vary considerably from physician to physician.
How many doctors in the New York–New Jersey–Connecticut Tri-State area treat homeostatic dysfunction?
There is no reliable number.
Because “homeostatic dysfunction” is not a recognized medical specialty or board certification, there is no official directory or database identifying physicians who specialize in treating it.
Many physicians treat individual disorders involving homeostatic regulation. Far fewer organize their evaluation of chronic illness around the broader question of why your body is losing its ability to maintain healthy physiological regulation across interconnected systems.
The Rothman Method™ approaches chronic health problems through this broader homeostatic framework. Rather than focusing exclusively on a diagnosis, symptom, organ, laboratory abnormality, or isolated “root cause,” we examine interconnected stressors and metabolic imbalances that may be disrupting your body's ability to regulate itself.
How is the Rothman Method™ different from functional medicine?
Functional medicine helped popularize the idea that symptoms may be connected and that understanding why they developed can be more useful than simply suppressing them.
The Rothman Method™ builds on systems-oriented thinking but asks an additional question:
“Why has your body lost its ability to compensate for the stresses being placed upon it?”
Instead of assuming every patient has one hidden “root cause,” the Rothman Method™ evaluates the relationships among interconnected physiological systems and looks for patterns that may help explain how the body is compensating and where those compensatory mechanisms may be struggling.
“Beyond Functional Medicine” does not mean abandoning systems-oriented thinking. It means placing symptoms, diagnoses, laboratory abnormalities, and potential causes into the broader context of the body's regulatory physiology.
Can I have symptoms even when my laboratory tests are normal?
Your body is constantly compensating for physiological stress.
In some situations, symptoms may develop while your body is still compensating and conventional testing remains within laboratory reference ranges.
As stress continues, the body's compensatory mechanisms may become less effective and measurable abnormalities may eventually appear.
This is one reason the Rothman Method™ looks beyond an isolated laboratory result and examines broader patterns of physiological regulation.
How does homeostasis relate to chronic illness?
Chronic illness can become complicated because the body's regulatory systems do not operate independently.
Sleep affects hormones. Hormones affect metabolism. Metabolism affects energy production. The nervous system influences digestion, circulation, immune activity, and hormonal signaling. Nutritional status can affect many of these processes.
This interconnectedness can help explain why someone may experience fatigue, difficulty sleeping, changes in weight, digestive symptoms, difficulty concentrating, temperature intolerance, changes in mood, pain, or other symptoms at the same time.
A homeostatic perspective does not mean ignoring a medical diagnosis. It means placing the diagnosis and symptoms into a larger physiological context and asking how the different pieces fit together.
