Gastro Esophageal Reflux (GERD)

GERD is a name given to a group of symptoms pertaining to abnormal gastro-intestinal function.

Some of the symptoms include diarrhea, heartburn, abdominal pain, chest pain, bloating, and gas.

Often times GERD will be associated with other chronic functional disorders like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), depression, anxiety and hormonal imbalances. The reason for this may be the presence of leaky gut syndrome.

Some of the underlying causes of GERD are poor glycemic control, autonomic dysfunction, dysbiosis, and other metabolic imbalances. GERD may also be caused by infection with Helicobacter Pylori.

Many patients with GERD are over consuming carbohydrates, especially in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). These excessive sugars in the gut are poorly digested and create large amounts of carbon dioxide in the intestine. This carbon dioxide causes pressure to build up in the gut and opens up the upper sphincter of the stomach. Reflux of stomach materials then occurs.

Unfortunately, many patients that suffer from GERD will resort to antacids and other drugs which lowers stomach acid levels. This however, is counter productive as low stomach acid further diminishes the ability to digest foods, promotes the over growth of harmful bacteria including Helicobacter Pylori.
