Rothman Recovery Program™
Complex Chronic Illness Requires a Personalized Plan
We don’t ask you to choose a treatment package before we understand why you’re sick.
If you have been struggling with a complex chronic illness, you may already have seen multiple physicians, undergone extensive testing, tried supplements, medications, restrictive diets, detox protocols, or other treatments and still feel that no one has put the entire picture together.
At Michael Rothman MD, your first step is not choosing a package.
Your first step is a comprehensive evaluation with Michael Rothman, MD.
Only after Dr. Rothman understands your history, previous testing, exposures, symptoms, metabolic patterns, and current health status will he recommend the level of care that makes sense for you.

What Happens During Your Evaluation?
Dr. Rothman looks beyond a diagnosis or collection of symptoms to understand what has happened to your body and what may continue to place stress on your system.
Your Health Timeline
When did your health begin to change? Was there mold exposure, COVID, another infection, antibiotics, hormonal changes, severe psychological or physical stress, dietary changes, surgery, overtraining, or medication exposure? Understanding the sequence matters.
Your Previous Testing and Treatment
Dr. Rothman reviews what has already been done, including relevant laboratory testing, imaging, previous diagnoses, medications, supplements, diets, antimicrobial therapies, binders, detoxification programs, and other treatments.
Your Homeostatic Patterns
Your body depends on multiple systems working together to maintain stability. Your evaluation may include assessment of the following areas.
Your Next Steps
By the end of the evaluation, Dr. Rothman should have a much clearer understanding of:
- What appears to be driving your illness
- Which problems deserve priority
- What additional testing may actually be useful
- Which treatments should be considered first
- How intensive your ongoing care is likely to need to be
Your Personalized Recovery Roadmap
After your evaluation, Dr. Rothman develops an individualized Recovery Roadmap based on your findings.
Reduce Ongoing Stressors
This may include environmental exposure, nutrition, medications, sleep disruption, circadian stress, gastrointestinal stressors, or other factors placing a continuing burden on your body.
Restore Homeostatic Control
Treatment may focus on correcting identified imbalances involving your autonomic nervous system, acid-base physiology, metabolic direction, electrolyte regulation, thyroid function, hormones, and other regulatory systems.
Identify Persistent Drivers
When appropriate, further investigation may include environmental illness, mold-related illness, microbial colonization, gastrointestinal dysfunction, stealth infections, hormonal abnormalities, or other persistent stressors.
Rebuild Your Metabolic Reserves
Recovery is not only about removing triggers. Your body also needs enough metabolic reserve to adapt, repair, regulate inflammation, produce hormones, maintain cellular energy, and respond appropriately to stress.
Dr. Rothman Recommends Your Level of Care
After your evaluation, you will not be handed a menu and asked to decide which medical package you should purchase.
Dr. Rothman will recommend the level and duration of care he believes is appropriate for your situation.
Some patients need relatively limited guidance. Others have spent years dealing with multiple interacting problems and require more physician oversight, testing, treatment adjustments, environmental investigation, and ongoing support.
Your recommended program may range from approximately three months to twelve months depending upon the complexity of your case.
The exact program and cost are determined only after your Comprehensive Recovery Evaluation.
There is no obligation to enroll in an ongoing program. Your initial evaluation is a complete professional service in itself.
Going Beyond Functional Medicine
Looking Beyond the Diagnosis
Conventional medicine often focuses on diagnosing a disease and treating its symptoms. Functional medicine often goes further by looking for underlying triggers such as nutrition, gastrointestinal dysfunction, infection, inflammation, environmental exposure, and hormonal imbalance.
The Rothman Approach
Dr. Rothman evaluates how these stressors may have affected your body's ability to maintain homeostasis. Two people can have the same diagnosis and require very different treatments because their underlying physiological patterns are different.
Is This Program Right for You?
- You have multiple symptoms affecting different parts of your body.
- You have seen numerous physicians without receiving a satisfactory explanation.
- Treatments that should have helped either failed or made you feel worse.
- You developed persistent symptoms after mold exposure, COVID, infection, extreme stress, or another major health event.
- You have been diagnosed with several overlapping syndromes.
- You have been told your laboratory testing is normal despite continuing symptoms.
- You feel that your health problems are interconnected but have never been evaluated that way.
- You want a physician to look at the entire pattern rather than treating each symptom separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to enroll in a Recovery Program after my initial evaluation?
No. Your Comprehensive Recovery Evaluation is a separate medical service. After the evaluation, Dr. Rothman will explain his findings and recommendations. You can then decide whether you would like to continue working with the practice.
Why don't you list one fixed price for the entire Recovery Program?
Because the amount of care required varies enormously. A patient with a relatively straightforward metabolic or environmental issue may require significantly less physician involvement than someone who has been ill for many years with mold exposure, MCAS, POTS, gastrointestinal dysfunction, hormonal abnormalities, infections, and severe metabolic depletion.
Will Dr. Rothman review my previous laboratory testing?
Yes. Relevant previous testing and medical records can be reviewed as part of your evaluation.
Will I need additional laboratory testing?
Possibly. Additional testing is ordered when Dr. Rothman believes it will provide useful information that could affect your treatment. The goal is not to order every available test.
Is this covered by insurance?
Michael Rothman MD does not participate with health insurance plans. Patients may use eligible HSA or FSA funds when permitted by their plan.
Are laboratory costs included?
Third-party laboratory, imaging, pharmacy, supplement, or other outside costs are generally separate unless specifically stated otherwise in your individual care plan.
Start With the Evaluation, Not the Package
