Metabolically Directed Wellness

We make every effort to bring back the old-fashioned relationship between doctor and patient. Our practice is to spend as much time and effort to understanding the “big picture” underlying your medical issues. Using this knowledge, we can bring you the individualized, biomarker-targeted treatments that you require to achieve long lasting solutions. You must understand that any symptom or disease that you are suffering from has a metabolic component to it. At Michael Rothman MD, we measure metabolic parameters, and then direct treatment to restore your metabolic balance.

You have multiple systems in your body that need to function together in order for you to be healthy. These vital systems include your immune system, your nervous system and your endocrine system (INE system). When your body is under some form of stress, (like poor diet, lack of sleep, too much conflict at work or exposure to mold for example) your immune, nervous and endocrine systems (INE system) will swing into action to defend your body against these stressors. However, if your stress levels become excessive or last too long, these same INE defense mechanisms can start to impair your body’s ability to control your INE system.

At Michael Rothman MD, we believe that all chronic conditions relate to imbalances in your body’s chemistry. Unfortunately, too many well-intentioned doctors and healers try to treat your symptoms without finding what is causing your problems in the first place. We believe in “find the cause, fix the cause” as the only rational approach to giving you a better quality of life moving forward.

Holistic Medicine

  • Looking at the whole person, not the symptoms
  • Addressing root causes of illness
  • Diet, nutritional status, environmental exposures, “stealth” organisms
  • Sleep-wake cycles, circadian rhythms, metabolic imbalances
  • Microbiome problems, genetic predispositions
  • Toxic exposures
  • Emotional Stressors

Treat the Roots not the Leaves

  • Symptoms and disease states most frequently are the result of long standing problems at foundational levels
  • Your body can only handle a certain amount of stress
  • When you exceed this critical level of stress, you will start to manifest symptoms.
  • Eventually these stressors can cause a diagnosable disease

Hippocrates 2,500 Years Ago

  • “All Disease begins in the Gut”
  • Every time you eat or drink, you are either enhancing your health or promoting disease

Paracelsus

  • “All things are poison, and nothing is without poison; the dosage alone makes it so a thing is not a poison”
  • “The dose makes the poison”

Conventional (Allopathic) Medicine verses Holistic Medicine

  • Conventional (Allopathic) medicine aims to diagnose and treat your disease or symptoms
  • Focuses on relieving symptoms or disease states by employing pharmaceutical drugs which usually blocks biological pathways
  • In contrast – Holistic Medicine aims to enhance function and allow your body to heal

Treating Your Symptoms can Cause Many Problems

Example of Conventional (Allopathic) Approach to high cholesterol

  • The patient has ”high” cholesterol
  • Treatment is pharmacologic to block production of cholesterol in your liver or block the transportation of cholesterol to your body tissues or
enhance elimination of cholesterol from your body
  • The patient is also advised to be on a low cholesterol diet
  • These approaches will very frequently lower your cholesterol, but can have many significant “side effects”

Example of a Holistic Approach to High Cholesterol

  • Firstly – recognize that cholesterol is a vital component of all cell membrane function, also vital for sex and adrenal hormone production, the production of bile salts and the production of vitamin D
  • Look for causes of high cholesterol, for example unrecognized or poorly treated thyroid problems, excessive oxidative stress, consuming inflammatory foods (sugar, seed oils…), metabolic imbalances
  • Treat the underlying cause of high cholesterol
  • There are no “side effects” other than increased health and wellness

Soy is not a Health Food, It is a Hormonal (Estrogenic) Poison

If You Crave Sugar, You Are Addicted to Sugar

Most Breakfast Cereals are Overloaded With Sugar

Example of Conventional (Allopathic) Approach to Chronic Pain

  • ”Make the diagnosis” – arthritis, fibromyalgia, regional pain syndrome, neuropathy, trigeminal neuralgia, TMJ …
  • Treat the symptoms with medications, surgery, nerve stimulators, physical therapy
  • These treatments may reduce your pain, but often can promote significant ”side effects” without truly getting to the root cause of the problem

Example of Holistic Approach to Chronic Pain

  • Firstly – recognize that your pain is being caused by some combination of physical, biochemical or psychological problems
  • Physical – structural problems in your body
  • Biochemical – Acid –Base imbalances in the tissues of your body, chronic inflammation, toxins in your tissues contributing to inflammation and
    irritation
  • Psychological – suppressed emotional and spiritual traumas that can impair normal functioning
  • Holistic treatment – fix the physical, biochemical and psychological problems
  • There are no “side effects” other than increased health and wellness

Example of Conventional (Allopathic) Approach to Depression

  • ”Make the Diagnosis” – Persistent Depressive Disorder, Postpartum Depression, Bipolar Depression, Seasonal Affective Disorder, Psychotic Depression
  • Choose the recommended drug to treat the diagnosed condition
  • Examples – Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, Tricycic Anti-Depressants, Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors, Stimulants
  • These drugs may help you feel less depressed, but can cause significant “side effects” and can also create a dependence on these drugs

Example of Holistic Approach to Treating Depression

  • Firstly, recognize that your depression is being caused by some imbalance in your life
  • Sunlight deficiency (seasonal affective disorder) is very common
  • Subclinical or poorly treated hypothyroidism
  • Various metabolic imbalances can cause depression

Unfiltered Sunlight is Vital to Your Health, Sunlight has a Powerful
Effect on Your Hypothalamic/Pituitary/Adrenal Axis and can help with depression

Undiagnosed or Poorly Treated Thryoid Problems can Cause Depression

Chronic Stress Can Increase ACTH and Cortisol Levels and Cause Depression

Chronic Stress is one of the Root Causes of all Disease States

  • Stressors – poor quality diet, poor sleep/wake cycles, poor air quality, over working, overtraining, excessive confrontational relationships, exposures to toxins, “stealth” organisms, fungal overgrowth, dysbiosis
