Cystathionine Beta Synthetase (CBS)

Cystathionine beta synthetase (CBS) is a very important enzyme for converting homocysteine into cystathionine. This conversion is extremely crucial for your health because elevations of homocysteine can contribute to a myriad of health problems. Some people have a variant to their genes that produce CBS and if you are one of these people than you will be predisposed to having problems with transsulfuration pathways and production of glutathione.

CBS dysregulation can present as either a down regulation of CBC pathways or an up regulation of CBS pathways. Either of these extremes in CBS metabolism can lead to clinical symptoms and eventually disease states.
If you have one of these gene variants and are unaware of it, this can lead to many health problems including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, dementia, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, birth defects and many others. Genetic testing can be useful to determine whether or not you have a CBS variant. If you do, you may need to supplement with specific nutriceutical and adhere to strict dietary practices.

Treating this condition requires expertise because just taking random supplements can lead to other metabolic imbalances. Dr. Michael Rothman at MDWellness has extensive experience with cystathionine beta synthetase (CBS) genetic variants. He will apply a Metabolically Directed approach to selecting which B vitamins (and other minerals and co-factors) you need in order to facilitate your treatment. Contact the MDWellness practice for a consultation in treating cystathionine beta synthetase (CBS) naturally.
