Holistic Treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a name given to a group of symptoms pertaining to abnormal gastro-intestinal function.
Some of the symptoms include constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, abdominal pain, bleeding, fistula formation, bloating, and gas.
Often times Inflammatory Bowel Disease will be associated with other chronic functional disorders like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), depression, anxiety and hormonal imbalances.
Some of the underlying causes of IBD are poor glycemic control, autonomic dysfunction, dysbiosis, chronic biotoxin exposure and other metabolic imbalances. Often times the patient will also have leaky gut syndrome.
Many patients with IBD are over consuming carbohydrates, especially in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). They may also be consuming fried foods, polyunsaturated vegetable oils, and food additives like nitrates, nitrites, MSG, and artificial sweeteners. These substances are highly toxic, and cause inflammation to the bowel.
IBD patients may have food allergies contributing to their problems. They also have a high incidence of bowel flora imbalances with excessive levels of pathogenic bacteria and low levels of beneficial bacteria.
A very common, but often unrecognized cause of IBD is chronic exposure to the interior of a water-damaged building and mold. This exposure causes an immune system mediated inflammatory response known as chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS).
IBD is always multi-factorial and only by finding the root cause of the problem through functional testing, including a metabolically Directed Functional Test, can this problem be solved.
